Memories

almost like a dream

Surprisingly, Vincent and Lucrecia's relationship wasn't all angst; the two did have some happier moments. Unfortunately, we don't get to see many of these moments, so a lot of what we know is based on conjecture. Somewhere along the road, Lucrecia settled into some level of comfort around Vincent, and they became good friends. It was probably around this time that Vincent began to develop a little crush on Lucrecia.

From what we know, they had a casual, comfortable friendship, to the point where professional titles were dropped in favor of a first-name basis (though Lucrecia does tease "goei-san", or "Mr. Bodyguard", about not doing his job). In the original game, they were depicted taking a friendly stroll together, and in Dirge of Cerberus, they had a picnic after Lucrecia teased him about sleeping on the job.

In those days, Vincent was very shy and easily caught off-guard by the more assertive Lucrecia. She was fond of flirting with and teasing him, laughing lightheartedly at his flustered reactions. She even prodded him into dancing with her in Lost Episode.

Lucrecia: Vincent. *turns a radio on* Dance with me.
Vincent: W-What, no...no I can't dance.
Lucrecia: So you don't like me?
Vincent: No, no that's not what I...
Lucrecia: Then dance with me. ... See, it isn't that bad, is it?
Perhaps more significant, though, is the briefer, quieter exchange that follows during their dance.
Lucrecia: Sometimes...I get so involved with my research that I lose myself. Whenever that happens though, you always come to my rescue...thank you, Vincent.
Vincent: What?
Lucrecia: Nothing...I just wanted to thank you.
Even though he was a constant reminder of her past mistake, Vincent provided respite for Lucrecia. He had nothing to do with the science and strife that had previously plagued her, and his pleasant personality made him an easy friend -- maybe, considering her profession, her only true friend. In his presence, she returned to being the cheerful, enthusiastic young woman she was before the accident. However, this also made her want to hide her mistake more than ever. What if he found out, and ended their friendship as a result? Her heart, already fragile from the tragedy of Grimoire's death, would not be able to bear it.
