everything falling down

Even though she had found some kind of peace in Vincent's company, Lucrecia could not completely rid herself of her guilt. She was unprepared for what would happen should he find out about her mistake, and fervently clung to the hope that he would not. However, in what seemed to be a repeat of her past carelessness, she left a confidential file open and unattended. Vincent stumbled upon it, and learned the truth.

Vincent, naturally, was shocked by this. He would have never imagined that Lucrecia had any kind of connection to his father, and never -- in a thousand years -- could he have have imagined that she caused his death. He felt betrayed and hurt that Lucrecia hadn't trusted him enough to confide in him.

Overwhelmed, Lucrecia turned away from him and told him sharply to stop. She sill wasn't ready to face her terrible mistake, much less through Vincent's discovery, whose reaction only added to her pain. She was deeply ashamed, and felt that there was no possible reason that Vincent could want to continue their friendship.

So, she ran away from him. After tearfully apologizing to him, she broke away from his hands -- and their budding relationship -- and fled into the distance. All Vincent could do was watch helplessly, locked in the mentality that if she was better off apart from him, then so be it.

At some point in time, Lucrecia made the decision to enter a relationship with Professor Hojo. He offered her an escape route: if she became his partner, she could not only pursue her scientific goals, but avoid Vincent's judgment. She didn't want to purposely hurt Vincent, but she was so caught up in her own pain that she didn't stop to consider his feelings.

Once again, Vincent could only passively watch on. He had no wish to interfere with her affairs, even if it caused him tremendous heartbreak; he cared more about Lucrecia's happiness than his own. If Lucrecia was happier with Hojo, then that was that.

Association with Hojo brought Lucrecia in contact with the Jenova Project. She became a test subject in Hojo's experiment, which would involve injecting Jenova cells directly into their unborn child.

This concerned Vincent, who became worried for both Lucrecia and her child. He couldn't believe that she would agree to such a horrific procedure, and tried to confront Hojo about it. He barely spoke before Lucrecia walked in, indignant. He asked her to confirm his fears; Hojo interrupted, telling him that he had no right to interfere. Nevertheless, Vincent summoned up the courage to ask Lucrecia directly, once again, if this was what she truly wanted. At this she grew frustrated: "Am I sure? Am I sure!? If this only concerns me, then yes, I am sure!"

Hurt by her words, and convinced that it was what Lucrecia truly desired for herself, Vincent withdrew once again. It was a decision he would come to regret for the rest of his life.
