a twist of fate

Vincent and Lucrecia's relationship can be traced back to before they even met, approximately 30 years before the start of FFVII. Lucrecia was a Class A biotechnologist working under Shinra. She wrote a thesis on the emergence of Chaos and Omega, two WEAPONs who would supposedly awaken when a large amount of life was eliminated all at once. However, her thesis was ridiculed by her fellow scientists at Shinra. Lucrecia was frustrated by this reaction, and was determined to prove them wrong.

Lucrecia's mentor was Grimoire Valentine, a Shinra paleontologist who also happened to be Vincent's father. He too was very dedicated to the research of Omega and Chaos, and even offered Lucrecia the chance to investigate Chaos' supposed resting place. She ended up taking a sample of a mysterious substance found at the site for testing.

Grimoire warned her against rushing headlong into things, but Lucrecia was too caught in her joy -- finally, she had something to back up her thesis. Moments later, the volatile substance broke out of its tube and went straight for her. She was saved in the nick of time by Grimoire, but at the cost of his life. Lucrecia could never get over the guilt she felt for causing the incident, and this would later affect her relationship with Vincent.

Some time later, she was transferred to the team working on the Jenova Project. A young Turk -- none other than Vincent Valentine himself -- was assigned to be her bodyguard. Upon hearing his name, she gasped, stunned that she would have to work next to the son of the man she had indirectly killed. When Vincent politely questioned her odd reaction, she quickly put on a shaky smile and introduced herself in turn.

It is not known what happened after that; however, it can be guessed that Lucrecia accepted the fact that she had to work with Vincent, and figured that as long as he never knew about her part in his father's death, she would be all right.
