A lot of couple shrines have pages 'defending' their pairing of choice, and accordingly this page was originally titled "in defense". But as time went on I saw there wasn't any real need to have it -- whether you like it or not, Vincent loved Lucrecia, and there was always some sort of bond between them. Besides, there's no need to give the silly bashers any credit. ;)

Additionally, a lot of the 'basis' for V/L comes from personal interpretation. FFVII is a volatile fandom, infamous for its Cloud/Aeris vs. Cloud/Tifa debate; Square Enix knows better than to come out in full with any kind of romantic relationship. Even though DoC goes further in-depth with the relationship Vincent shared with Lucrecia, there still remains a level of ambiguity. It is made apparent that Lucrecia did care about him -- however, you still don't necessarily have to see it as romantic; I've seen people interpreting her "true feelings" as nothing more than platonic. As much as I would have liked to see a canon mutual romance -- and it was pretty damn close too -- it's all subjective in the end.
