Possibility
was there a relationship?
Being a Vincent/Lucrecia fan, it was inevitable that I would stumble upon the fan-theory that Vincent is Sephiroth's father. Or, colloquially speaking, the theory that Vincent and Lucrecia were doin' it behind Hojo's back.
I don't think it happened.
You might be looking incredulously at this page right now, knowing the focus of this website. However, I never thought from Day 1 that the two had a full-blown romantic relationship, much less a sexual one. In fact, the thought that Vincent could be Sephiroth's father never even struck me until I stumbled upon it online. After reading those theories, I admit that it makes a little more sense (it could have happened within the frame of the story), but I still don't think that Vincent is Sephiroth's dad, or that he ever got that intimately involved with Lucrecia.
For one, Vincent was very shy in his younger days; Lucrecia was much more forward than him. I would be surprised if he ever worked up the courage to tell her how he felt. More than likely he would have been too afraid of upsetting her to risk it, no matter how obvious her flirting.
Furthermore, misunderstanding was a big part of why their relationship failed. There was a serious lack of communication regarding their true feelings -- Lucrecia was scared to reveal her part in the accident, and Vincent was unable to make it clear how much he cared about her -- which inevitably led to pain and confusion. It's likely that Vincent got angry because Lucrecia hadn't trusted him enough to tell him the truth.
Finally, no amount of canon juggling can change the fact that Lucrecia did marry Hojo. Hojo also explicitly states that he is Sephiroth's father. Fans have taken Vincent's surprised reaction to that declaration as a hint that he might be the actual father, yet they haven't stopped to consider that only so many subtle implications can be stuffed into a game meant for adolescents.
Is it a possibility? Yes. But as far as I know, nothing backs it up or even gives reason to it, and it would require too much of an alternate interpretation. Even in a game like FFVII, those can only go so far.
