Moving On

i won't forget you

I'll start this off by saying that it is perfectly reasonable, given what we know, for Vincent to 'move on'. At the same time, though, I don't think he's in any rush to find a second love. Getting into another relationship is not a requisite for putting the past behind. He could move forward without forgetting Lucrecia or without having to fall in love again. All things considered, I think Vincent will stay single for the rest of his life -- not that it's a bad thing, of course.

Am I saying that it has no chance of happening? Of course not, not to mention we'll probably never know. But to me, it's a small chance. Lucrecia will always occupy a significant part of his heart; he's not likely to forget her. More importantly, he's not likely to forget the effect she had on him. When your first love is unrequited and the catalyst for death and general loss of humanity, I can hardly blame Vincent for not being interested in future relationships.

Moreover, it would be an understatement to say that Vincent is a bit of a romantic. He let Lucrecia go if it meant her happiness, died for her, and continued to mourn her passing for 30 years. Whatever existed between them might be gone, but he's shown quite plainly that he holds it dearly within his memory; he still loves her and is loyal to her after all these years.

"I used to be nothing but a stone in the river of time, but three years ago it was you and the others who taught me I had to move ahead."

Really, does Vincent need to be 'healed' by a new love? He's made his peace with Lucrecia, settled his dispute with Hojo, and found new friends in AVALANCHE. Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie and the rest place their trust in him as a companion and warrior. It was through them that he finally began to open up a bit -- he expresses his concern, amusement and even relief to the other members of the hodgepodge team. In Advent Children, he returns of his own accord to help Cloud. In DoC, he works with others right from the start to the end. (He even acquired a cell phone so he could keep in touch!) He has a dysfunctional 'family' in AVALANCHE and Lucrecia's memory in his heart, and I think that's all he needs. He's already moved on and put his demons behind him; romance doesn't have to be part of the equation.
